Julia Ibbini is a Jordanian and British dual nationality artist headquartered in Abu Dhabi, whose intricate and elaborate work is exemplified in both modern digital design as well as traditional craftsmanship. Her artworks are heavily influenced by Islamic geometry, embroidery or even electronic music. Her colorful laser-cut paper works may take weeks to a few months to finish, due to their complexity and countless pieces that the artist needs to painstakingly paint by hand.
Ibbini, spent her childhood years surrounded by Islamic motifs and patterns which in turn added to developing her strong artistic sense. As a designer, she found her love towards ornaments. She works with a computer to make her compositions and then laser-cuts each and every tiny detail which she then combines in her composition to make a whole. Each portion of the design is heavily layered with fascinating details.
“The approach in the actual presentation of the works is quite fluid – a more abstract interaction with a great deal of improvisation. I am often unsure of the final outcome – the surprise at the end result is part of the appeal. Drawing inspiration from across centuries and cultures – using machines and computer code as a way to present a contemporary visual language of my own”, explains Ibbini.
Ibbini has exhibited extensively across the UAE in both solo and group projects with recent exhibitions having been organised in collaboration with the Emirates Palace, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) and with the Mojo Gallery in Dubai.
Julia Ibbini is one of the most talented and esteemed contemporary artists in the United Arab Emirates. Julia Ibbini defines her work as a search for her own identity and sense of life, combining digital works, assemblages and collages in living creations with a strong feminine touch. This personal approach resonates in the choice of materials that are translated into a “riot of color and chaos, light and dark,” patterns and textures. The artist regularly participates in numerous group exhibitions in galleries in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
