Last Thursday, South Korean band BLACKPINK released their music video for their new single “Kill this Love”. The video was viewed 56.7 million times within the first 24 hours (first record). With this, the girls broke the throne of Ariana Grande, who reached 55.4 million views on the first day with “thank u, next” at the end of last year.
On Google’s video platform YouTube, more and more records have been toppling over the past few months and both the number of views and the number of subscribers, as well as the speed of their distribution, are constantly entering new spheres. Now YouTube was once again able to announce three records, which were broken by a single video in no time.
Within three days, Black Pink even broke the magic mark of 100 million views (second record). But also the premiere of the video made a record. Immediately after the upload, it was seen by 979,000 viewers at the same time.
K-Pop Videos are no strangers to breaking Youtube records though. The most famous example is without question Gangnam Style by PSY, which was the first video to break the 1 billion mark as well as 2 billion views. With the records of BLACKPINK, K-Pop continues to ride on a wave of success. South Korea’s pop music has been celebrating success for years. Even in the west.
The girls continue to impress ahead of the North American leg of their “In Your Area” world tour and their dates at the Coachella music festival. YouTube recently announced that not only will they be streaming BLACKPINK’s Coachella performance, but they will also be streaming to a screen in Times Square, New York!
The girl group BLACKPINK consists of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. The four singers are between 22 and 24 years old. After the debut single in 2016, they won several newcomer awards in important Korean music programs within five months.
