Neste Unveils Zero-Footprint Nolla Cabin in Finland

The Nolla cabin is a prototype of a zero emission housing you can erect anywhere – with no traces left behind. Robin Falck has designed the modern wood and mirrored cabin, that’s located in the Finnish archipelago, on the Vallisaari island.

Finnish renewable diesel company Neste, ranked as the most sustainable energy company in the world on the 2018 Global 100 Index, has put together a tiny, portable wood cabin that it calls “an experiment to explore how we could live on less, while spending more time enjoying the nature around us.”

Named after the Finnish word for zero, the Nolla cabin is a 9 square meter wooden teepee that can be assembled or disassembled by three people, and sits on eight extendable wooden legs, making it easy to erect and level even on bumpy and uneven surfaces, with almost zero impact to the habitat beneath.

One wall face, which should be pointed South where possible, is covered with solar panelling to provide power. The other has reflective mirror panels to help stop the small home from overheating in summer.

The A Frame style cabin has enough space inside for essentials like two camping beds and a Wallas stove for cooking and heating. In other words, it’s the essence of minimalism in every aspect, which is kind of the point because the goal is zero footprint, zero waste and zero emissions.

“The cottage represents an alternative lifestyle without the hassle of modern amenities,” Falck explains. “It represents an approach to living where the focus is more on what lays on the outside of a dwelling, rather than within…most importantly, the cabin enables life in the realm of nature, from which I feel people have become alienated.”

The Nolla cabin and its surroundings offer an excellent environment for a relaxing getaway from everyday life. Recommended past-time activities at the cabin include enjoying the surrounding nature, and quiet meditation.

The Nolla cabin is available for rent via AirBnb, and as the design team points out, the low-impact solutions found in Nolla can be integrated into any cabin.
