Ayam Cemani: This Chicken Is Completely Black, Inside and Out

The Ayam Cemani is kind of an outstanding chicken – it is rare and out of the ordinary, both inside and outside, making it a really desirable commodity as a luxury chicken. The Indonesian chicken is completely black. Not just the parts you can see. On the inside, the chicken’s bones, organs and even the blood are also completely black.

Often called the “Lamborghini of poultry,” the Ayam Cemani is usually a friendly chicken. They lay very large eggs, and are really easy to take care of. The black appearance is caused by fibromelanosis, which is a genetic mutation which causes the chickens to have excess melanin.

In some places, including their native Indonesia, these chickens are regarded as a sacred animal, as a result they are highly valued.  This is due to being the core of quite a few myths and beliefs. Some say consuming their meat will cure illnesses. Other people say they bring good fortune and luck to all those who have them.

If you like collecting rare and unusual chickens, then the Ayam Cemani could be the exotic breed that you will add to your farm or home. The level of popularity of these chickens has increased lately, with a single bird selling for as much as $2,000-$4,000.
