iSteef, the Artist Who Creates Food Art From Bananas

Artist Stephan Brusche, also referred to as iSteef on Instagram, is mostly recognized for his work with a rather unusual canvas: the banana. With merely a knife in addition to a marker, Brusche has transformed lots of blank bananas into astonishingly elaborate fruit doodles.

iSteef learned that bananas could actually serve as a distinctive canvas by chance. “It all started a few years back when I just started using Instagram. I was at work and I just wanted to post something,” he recounts. “I then noticed my banana and I figured it would make a nice post if I just drew a little happy face on it. I took a ballpoint pen and just started drawing. I was pretty amazed how pleasant a banana peel is to draw on. After that I tried to come up with new ideas for drawings while using the shape of the banana in all kinds of clever ways. Trying to keep pushing myself I eventually started to carve in the banana peel as well.”

His bananas are are one part sculpture, one part drawing, and another part pure creativity. The figures portrayed on the bananas originate from popular culture, Brusche’s creative imagination, or perhaps even the Bible. In some cases, the wit comes from the way he makes use of the peel. It acts as a sort of negative space when cut away or is draped in such a way to make the scene more interesting.

iSteef’s Instagram account presently has nearly 80k followers and he has been showcased on Chiquita’s blog, yeah the world’s most famous provider of bananas. He has released two books and is constantly pushing his craft. His genuine delight for using the banana as his muse is obvious in his art.
