The decision was made after Pantone scattered a team around the world to search current street styles, high fashion, art, and popular travel destinations for the up-and-coming “it” color.
Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year: “Ultra Violet,” a “spiritual, cosmic” purple that “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” Ultra Violet is noticeably reminiscent of the purple that’s so synonymous with late rock icon Prince, which Pantone acknowledged by giving him his own official hue, “Love Symbol #2,” in August. The difference between Ultra Violet and Love Symbol #2, though, is that Ultra Violet is brighter and more enigmatic.
“Purple is a complex color,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “We’re in a complex time; this is a complex color.”
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Eiseman. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
The Pantone Colour Institute has been choosing a colour of the year since 1999. Last year, a zesty shade of green called Greenery was chosen, and in 2016, Pantone picked two soft colours – a baby blue and dusty pink.
