Arguably Snapchat’s most popular feature to date is their augmented reality ‘selfie filters’ that allow you to augment your face. Instagram, Facebook’s most powerful weapon in its battle to destroy Snapchat, are rolling out their version of the popular face filter feature today.
“Today, we’re introducing face filters in the camera, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining,” their press release reads. “Whether you’re sitting on the couch at home or out and about, face filters help you express yourself and have playful conversations with friends.”
“From math equations swirling around your head to furry koala ears that move and twitch, you can transform into a variety of characters that make you smile or laugh,” reads the Instagram blog. “To see our initial set of eight face filters, simply open the camera and tap the new face icon in the bottom right corner.”
Instagram’s face filters will work whether you’re using the front or the back camera on your phone. The filters can be used in any of Instagram’s shooting modes — photo, video, or even Boomerang.
In addition to the new face filters, Instagram Stories is launching a slew of new creative tools. “Rewind” is a camera mode that will reverse the action, returning a dropped Frappucino to your hands in one whipped-cream-topped piece — or throwing tossed confetti backwards into the air from which it fell.
Instagram is also introducing an eraser brush that allows you to erase things you’ve drawn in your stories or even play around with removing color from sections of your drawings. You can also add hashtags to your stories now, via text or with a hashtag sticker.
Instagram’s new face filters are available worldwide as part of a free app update on iOS and Android.
