The live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell is fast-approaching theaters. Scarlett Johannson is the Major, and she is spraying bullets and kicking ass in this brand new trailer for the Hollywood remake of Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film and Masamune Shirow’s original manga.
The trailer starts off with the Major and her crew breaking into a room, just missing the hologram of a mysterious person. “I saw someone down there,” Major said. “He wasn’t human.”
The trailer explores some of the surrounding mysteries about the Major and her past. Little is revealed but there are plenty of hints concerning her previous life. It seems that the government has given her a backstory that she has believed so far. But the main antagonist Kuze is offering her an alternative, quite different version. The main story will probably revolve around the Major chasing down Kuze and the possible truth behind his claims.
Ghost in the Shell is an iconic franchise spanning multiple anime movies, TV shows, manga and video games. It offers a hacker-centric look into the future, where augmentation is rife and threats to human life are often conducted through digital, rather than physical means. Ghost in the Shell has never been turned into a live-action movie. The upcoming adaptation was therefore inevitable, given the sheer volume of beloved source material available.
