Netflix has announced that they are working on a new original series based on the very popular Castlevania franchise by Konami. The news amounts to a single line of confirmation in a Netflix press release: “Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017.”
At the helm of bringing the story of the last surviving member of the Belmont clan to screens worldwide is acclaimed writer Warren Ellis. The show’s producer, Adi Shankar, says it’s based on the third game in the series, “Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.” Shankar also has a message for the folks who think this show is destined to be another bad video game adaptation: “I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best f—–g video game adaptation ever made to date. I’ve seen it, and it’s f—–g amazing.”
To Shankar’s credit, his past work includes the excellent “Dredd” film. Additionally, the production company is Frederator Studios — better known as “the folks behind ‘Adventure Time,'” among other things.
The first Castlevania game was released in 1986, but it’s unclear if the series will focus on the events of that specific title or later installments in the franchise. The last game in the Castlevania series, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, was released in 2014.[Netflix]
